Stephen Roberts has  close associations with the distinctive world of the British brass band. He first became involved in 1980 as musical director of the Jones & Crossland Band in Birmingham. His first forays into the tradition of ‘contesting’ were immediately successful and his arrangements were quickly taken up by bands across the world. There is hardly a band that does not play the Roberts arrangement of Pastime With Good Company and his transcription of Holst’s Planet’s Suite is acclaimed as a landmark achievement. Venus & Jupiter were used as the test piece for the 2003 British Open Brass Band Championship. Stephen Roberts is regularly called upon to adjudicate at band contests and has officiated at at various competitions, including the British Open, National Area Finals, Brass in Concert, North American Brass Band Association and Australian National Championships.
